Show Victoria Secret fashion models

A Victoria’s Secret executive has come under fire for saying he doesn’t believe transgender models should walk the runway for the lingerie brand’s annual fashion show.

Ed Razek, chief marketing officer of L Brands and one of the masterminds behind the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, said in a Vogue interview Thursday that while the brand has been a leader in diversity and inclusion, fans shouldn’t expect complete representation across the gender spectrum.

Razek said that while he had considered featuring transgender and plus-sized models in the show, the company “did not market to the whole world.”

He later suggested that a transgender model would detract from the show’s aspirational quality.

“Shouldn’t you have transsexual in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should,” Razek said. “Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is,” he said.

Razek issued a statement Friday that walked back his earlier remarks.

“To be clear, we absolutely would cast a transgender model in our show. We’ve had transgender models from to castings… And like many others, they didn’t make it,” he said. “But it was never about gender. I admire and respect their journey to embrace who they really are.”
