After a 38-year-old Waldorf man has been accused of threatening to cut a woman with a knife after an altercation in La Plata last week.

Joesph Cornell Cole was charged with first-degree assault, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute and other related charges.

On May 23, around 11 p.m., La Plata Police officers were dispatched to the 500 block of St. Mary’s Avenue in La Plata for a report of an assault with a dangerous weapon.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim, who told police that she broke up with Cole about a month ago and he had been allegedly calling her and showing up at her home since then.

The victim told officers that as she was driving home, she received a phone call from Cole, who asked her to meet him to talk. She stated that she did not want to see him.

As she was walking on St. Mary’s Avenue, she saw Cole walking towards her. The victim said they started arguing about personal issues and she tried to leave, but he would not let her.

Cole then allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and threatened to cut the victim, according to the victim in charging documents. The victim said she backed away and called the police, which is when Cole allegedly threw his knife in the grass and fled the scene, according to charging documents.

An officer located the knife in the area that the victim said Cole threw it and placed it in evidence.

Police later located Cole nearby and arrested him. According to charging documents, Cole told officers that he never had a knife and never pointed anything at the victim.

Officers transported Cole to the Charles County Detention Center, where he was scanned by an electric body scanner. A corrections officer detected that Cole had an object hidden on his person.

Cole was sat on a bench inside the detention center and was allegedly seen on surveillance footage shaking his pant legs and then kicking something under the bench, according to charging documents.

Officers then found marijuana under the bench where Cole was sitting. Corrections officers then did a mandatory strip search and found marijuana attached to his underwear, pant legs, socks and legs, as well as two small plastic bags in his anal cavity, according to charging documents.

Cole was released from the detention center on May 25, according to court records.
