Churches help with hurricane relief

LAPEL — The United Methodist churches in Lapel are joining together to fill a trailer full of supplies for victims of Hurricane Michael.

Items can be dropped off noon-6 p.m. this Sunday through Sunday, Oct. 28, at the CVS in Lapel, 301 E. Pendleton Ave.

Items needed include bottled water, pillows, blankets, paper plates, eating utensils, hygiene products, toiletries, baby diapers, baby formula, baby wipes, baby towels, bedding, socks, kitchen items, canned foods, pet foods, school supplies, book bags, first-aid kits, rain ponchos, ice coolers, bug spray, wasp and hornet spray, batteries, cleaning supplies, sleeping bags and flashlights.

Historical society to meet Monday

ANDERSON — The monthly meeting of the Madison County Historical Society will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Bowman Room of the Museum of Madison County History, 11 W. 11th St. The meeting is open to members and the public.

Steve Jackson will give a presentation, “Small Town USA,” about the Alexandria pamphlet that was distributed in friendly countries in Europe and elsewhere during World War II. The purpose of the pamphlet was to relate how folks lived in small-town America, as opposed to the scenes in American movies.

Grandparents support group to meet

ANDERSON — The Grandparents raising grandchildren support group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Hospital Education Center on Madison Avenue.

The group is designed for all relatives who are raising someone else’s children, and everyone is welcome. Babysitting will be provided during the meeting.

U.S. Rep. candidates forum Tuesday

ANDERSON — The League of Women Voters of Anderson and Madison County will host a forum for 5th District Congressional candidates Susan Brooks and Dee Thornton at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Anderson city building auditorium, 120 E. Eighth St.

No promotional material or signs will be allowed inside the auditorium. Each candidate will be provided a table for promotional material in the lobby area.

The Herald Bulletin will host as media partner, and Editor Scott Underwood will moderate the forum. A certified translator for the hearing impaired will be provided.

Indy Zoo lion kills longtime mate

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis Zoo representative said Friday that an adult female, Zuri, fatally attacked 10-year-old male Nyack in their outdoor yard Monday before the zoo opened for the day.

The zoo says the two had been housed together for eight years and produced three cubs in 2015. Nyack was on loan from the San Diego Zoo.

Alleged Latin Kings member indicted

HAMMOND — A federal prosecutor says an alleged member of the Latin Kings gang has been indicted for the 1999 slayings of two men in Hammond.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Kirsch said Friday that 37-year-old Jeremiah Shane Farmer of Hammond is accused of fatally beating 74-year-old Marion Lowry and 67-year-old Harvey Siegers with a small sledge hammer at Calumet Auto Rebuilders on June 25, 1999.
