Eastern grid team off to best start since ’79

At 5-0, Eastern’s football team is off to its best start since the Carter Administration.

The last time Eastern opened 5-0 was the 1979 season when the Comets won their first six games on their way to an 8-2 record.

Eastern will look to make it 6-0 Friday when it hosts Clinton Central in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game. The Comets are in second place in the HHC at 2-0. Sheridan leads at 4-0.

Class 2A No. 4-ranked Tipton also will go for 6-0 Friday. The Blue Devils visit Northwestern for a Hoosier Conference East Division game.

The following is Friday’s area schedule. Games start at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

• Clinton Central at Eastern

• Taylor at Sheridan

• Carroll at Tri-Central

• Peru at Wabash

• 8 p.m. — North Central (Farmersburg) at Maconaquah

Hopkins scores ace at American Legion

Sam Hopkins hit a hole-in-one Saturday at the American Legion G.C. He used a 9-iron to ace No. 14, which played 140 yards. It’s his first ace.

Nick Lorenc, Eric Eramo, Dominic Eramo, Jeff Downs, Dane Orbaugh, Earl Campbell and Tracy Hatfield witnessed the shot.
