Sport volleyball team golf Goal

OIL CITY — The Saegertown girls volleyball team made quick work of non-region opponent Oil City on Thursday, winning 25-12, 25-9, 25-16.

Claudia Fetzner led the serving game with five aces. Kill leaders included Mikayla Balog with 10, Kaylee Mulligan with seven kills and Cami Reynolds with six kills. And Carlie Schlosser distributed 24 assists for the Lady Panthers (2-0).

Saegertown also won the JV match, 25-13, 25-13.


Devils fall short

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — Cambridge Springs put up a fight, but it was not enough as Fort LeBoeuf captured a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 win during non-region girls volleyball action on Thursday.

Julia Mailliard finished with 10 kills and 14 digs to pace the Blue Devils (1-1). Rachel Swanson contributed 10 digs and 28 assists. Also for the Devils, Chloe Schultz tallied 11 digs, Cori Schmidt nine kills, Rhianna Eakin seven kills and Abby Wescott chipped in with three blocks.

The Bison also won the JV match 25-15, 25-18.


Bears upend ’Jackets

GIRARD — Despite a hiccup in Game 2, Union City was able to post a win over Girard on Thursday in non-region girls volleyball action.

The Bears won the match 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, 25-14.

Cyaira Zielinski had 29 assists for the Bears. Natalie Franke added 16 kills and six aces, while Sydney Gilbert tallied eight kills, Eliza Reynolds four aces and Tara Jackson five kills and two blocks.


Muskies fall in five

WEST MIDDLESEX — The Jamestown girls volleyball team split a pair of matches over the past two days. On Wednesday, the Lady Muskies lost a five-set marathon to Region 1 opponent West Middlesex 14-25, 25-11, 25-15, 20-25, 15-13. However, the girls bounced back with a 25-12, 25-6, 25-20 win over Rocky Grove on Thursday. 

Among the leaders for Jamestown (1-1, 1-1 Region 1) against West Middlesex were Morgan Popielarcheck with seven points, four aces, seven kills and nine blocks; Farah Messai with six points and 27 passes; Brielle Wright with five points, three aces and 11 assists; and Evie Wood with 11 points and five aces. 

Camille McClimans had a big night against Rocky Grove with 14 points, two aces, 13 passes and three kills. Madison McElhinny had five points, two aces and 18 passes. Popielarcheck added seven points, two aces and 12 kills. Wright tallied nine points, two aces and 16 assists. Wood had eight points, two aces, four kills and four blocks.  


Sailors slip vs. Hornets

STONEBORO — After the Lakeview girls volleyball team dropped its second set to Hickory 25-10, the match seemed to be all but over. 

However, the Lady Sailors made it interesting, bouncing back to claim the next two games. 

Yet, Hickory escaped with a narrow fifth set, claiming an intense non-region clash 25-23, 25-10, 17-25, 19-25, 15-13 on Thursday. 

Leading the way for Lakeview was Sarah Cole with 14 kills and nine digs; Natalie Ray with nine kills, six aces and 26 digs; Jensen Troy with 12 kills, 23 assists and 14 digs; Michaela Rose with 29 digs; Sierra Williams with 16 digs and Chloe Herrmann with 13 digs.

Doddo leads Lakeview to second-place finish

CORRY — McDowell may have taken top honors in the team and individual races, but three locals finished in the top five and Lakeview grabbed runner-up in the team race at the North Hills Invitational on Thursday.

McDowell finished with a 310 to win the team title. Max Paris fired a 72 to win individual medalist honors, while Skyler Carr (78) And Matt Manczka (79) also broke 80 for the Trojans.

Lakeview’s top team was in second place with a 313. Zach Doddo (74) was second in the individual standings, and Brett Beith (78) also broke 80. Lakeview’s second unit placed 18th with a 403.

The next best local squad was Meadville with a 353 to place sixth. Ryan Ferry led the Bulldogs with a 76, which was also good for third in the individual competition.

Not far behind Meadville with a 361 was Saegertown in eighth place. Will Phelan fired a 77 to place fourth individually.

Taking fifth in the individual race was Mercyhurst Prep’s Mike Stoddart with a 77. The Lakers finished fourth as a team with 321 points. Fort LeBoeuf had two golfers break 80 — Derrick Chields (79) and Anthony Worley (79) to place third with a 321. Iroquois was fifth as a team with a 349.
