15th power SWIM Briefs National

ST. JOHN — Registration will soon close for the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park’s 15th-annual Power Swim, scheduled this year for May 27 at Trunk Bay.

This year’s Power Swim will be limited to 200 swimmers, with only two courses being used: a one-mile short course, and a two-mile long course. Race officials expect to return to the traditional format in 2019.

The entry fees through May 26 are $65 for adults and $30 for youth (17-under), with participants registering either online at or by calling 340-779-4940.

Registration can also be done in person on St. John at the Friends of the Park store at Mongoose Junction, or the Connections locations in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay; on St. Thomas at the Caribbean Surf Co. locations in Red Hook and Havensight; and on St. Croix at SCUBA in Christiansted.

Late registration will also be available during the pre-race meeting at Trunk Bay, which begins at 3 p.m. May 26, if space is available. The late registration fees are $85 for adults and $50 for youths.

A practice swim will be held today beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Trunk Bay.

Rosters now available for Zero Tolerance League

ST. THOMAS — Roster registration forms are now available for teams planning on participating in the Zero Tolerance Basketball Summer League.

The league will have teams playing in three age-group divisions – 9-12, 13-15 and 16-18 – with the tentative starting date May 23. League games will run through June 30.

Island Vibes volleyball camps in June, August

ST. THOMAS — Island Vibes Summer Camp will hold its annual volleyball camps in June and August at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Sports and Fitness Center.

Youth soccer development clinics at Smith Bay facility

ST. THOMAS — The U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Association will resume its Youth Development training sessions on St. Thomas on Saturdays at the Smith Bay Ballpark.

The training sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Saturday, and are open to boys and girls ages 5-13.

ST. THOMAS — A youth basketball skills clinic conducted by the Zero Tolerance Basketball Organization will be held weekly on Sundays.

The clinics are for kids ages 6-9, and will be held the Bowsky Elementary School court.

30th Bastille Day Kingfish tournament set for July 15

ST. THOMAS — Registration is now open for the 30th-annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament, which will be held July 15 in the waters off St. Thomas.

Organized by the Northside Sportfishing Club beginning in 1987, last year’s tournament drew more than 175 anglers, including 30 junior anglers, aboard 59 boats.

Last year’s tournament was won by Lawrence Aubain Jr., who landed a 26.05-pound kingfish aboard “About Time,” a 31-foot Bertram fishing boat.

Prizes and awards will be handed out to the top finishers in more than a dozen different categories, including Best Boat, Best Captain, Best Male Angler, Best Female Angler, Best Junior Male Angler, Best Junior Female Angler and fish-specific awards such as Largest Barracuda, Bonito and Mackerel.

This year’s tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m., with fishing ending at noon sharp. The prizes will be awarded during an after-tournament party at Hull Bay Hideaway.
