Volunteers from First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Redlands recently helped with two Christmas events at Central City Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino, one for children in the mission’s after-school program, the other for homeless men who have shelter at the mission on cold nights.

At the Dec. 16 event for two dozen children, First Lutheran member Jim Durbin of Yucaipa, as Santa Claus, handed out presents purchased by First Lutheran members as part of the church’s Kinder Tree program. The recipients ranged in age from 3 to 18.

Durbin’s wife, Jeannie, took keepsake photos of each child with Santa while Jessica Esquivel, director of the after-school program, made sure everyone on Santa’s list got a present to take home.

Dianne Wolkenhauer of First Lutheran and her daughter Caroline arrived early to wrap any unwrapped gifts that came from First Lutheran to the mission.

On the evening of Dec. 17, volunteers from First Lutheran, with Central City Lutheran Mission staff, helped dozens of homeless men pick out clothing including heavy jackets, sweaters, shirts, shoes, socks and underwear in the mission’s thrift store. Some of the men got haircuts.

All were treated to snacks and soft drinks served up by First Lutheran member Jan Secrist.

Helping the men find what they needed were Lenore and Joe Lewis, Elisabeth Kempe-Olinger, Stephanie Gasca and Gerri Licke, all from First Lutheran, along with Kevin Butler, who prepared a dinner of ham with all the fixings for the men to eat after they finished picking out clothing.

Providing live Christmas music were Central City Lutheran Mission Pastor Jay Egenes and his friends and the Main Street Band of San Bernardino.

This was the ninth straight year for the mission’s Christmas for the Homeless program.
