VOLUNTEERS: Businesses, groups, organizations, churches and others are needed to volunteer to sell Christmas trees for Big Brothers Big Sisters' 38th annual Christmas tree sale beginning Saturday, Nov. 24. Volunteers serve a three-hour shift at the old Food Fair lot, 1st Street and 6th Avenue; HIMG, U.S. 60 East; and Ashland Tennis Center. Hours are from noon to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends. Call 304-522-2191 or 606-329-8799.

WISHES: The long-time food services director at Cabell Huntington Hospital is privileged with taking a few minutes Tuesday, Nov. 20, from her busy schedule of trying to help feed others to eat a slice of her birthday cake. Kathy Hettlinger is being wished a fun-filled day with love, happiness, fond memories and many more birthdays.

WORKSHOP: West Virginia University Cabell County Extension Service offers a free Leap into Science "Balance" Workshop at Club McFinn Junior at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Huntington Mall JC Penney Court, Barboursville. The nationwide program is from the Franklin Institute Science Museum for ages 3-10.

APPOINTED: Gov. John R. Kasich recently appointed Dr. Timothy V. Kyger of Gallipolis, Ohio, to the State Dental Board. The term continues through April 6, 2020.

DINNER: A take-out or dine-in baked steak dinner is served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. Advance tickets only are available at $10.

PATCH: Congratulations to Tyson Cremeans of Troop 733, Barboursville. He was among 17 scouts and leaders earning "The Good Book Patch" in early September at WVU Jackson's Mill, Weston. This is considered the anchor patch in Bible Basics, encouraging youth and adults to read the Bible. Classes were taught by The Rev. Dr. Timothy J. Allen during Circuit Rider 30, gathering conducted in conjunction with West Virginia United Methodist Men's retreat.

CONCERT: Woman's Club of Huntington, Cabell County Schools and Marshall University sponsor the 58th Open Competition for Soloist at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 13, 2019, in Marshall University's Smith Music Hall. High schoolers and middle school students in grades 7-12 in West Virginia and Tri-State area may audition. A $20 application fee is charged. The student can have a composition for solo instrument or voice piece with orchestral parts, which are available to rent. There is a 12-minute time limit. Applications for concert are due no later than Jan. 7. The winner must be available to perform with Marshall University Symphonic Orchestra directed by Dr. Elizabeth Reed Smith on the following dates: Monday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. dress rehearsal, Smith Music Hall; Tuesday, March 5, Community and Family Concert; at 7:30 p.m., Smith Music Hall; and Thursday, March 7, 9 a.m., Young People's Concert at Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Snow date is Friday, March 8. The winner also receives a $150 award from the club. A GIRL!: Andrew and Rachel Perkins became parents of a daughter, Ally, Oct. 14, weighing in at 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long. She is granddaughter of Chris and Bunny Perkins of Enslow Park Presbyterian Church. May this bundle of lace and pink frills bring much enjoyment to the family.
